How to be the cool dog this summer!
Unlike may warmer countries the UK experiences more frequent temperature fluctuations, dogs can take 4 weeks to acclimatise to changes in temperature
So it’s essential to ensure our pets stay comfortable and safe during warmer weather. Dogs are also particularly vulnerable to heat due to their limited ability to sweat, relying primarily on panting and their paw pads to regulate body temperature. Here are some practical tips to help keep your dog cool and happy during those hot days.
Keep you dog hydrated
Always provide fresh, cool water for your dog. Consider using a collapsible water bowl for walks and outdoor activities. Regularly refill their water bowl to encourage hydration and prevent heat-related illnesses. If your dog isn’t a big drinker, try adding a little bone broth or goat’s milk to their water; it only takes a splash!
Replan you Walks
Plan your walks and playtime for early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are cooler. This helps avoid the hottest part of the day and reduces the risk of heatstroke. Hot pavement can also burn your dog’s paw pads, so stick to grassy areas whenever possible. On particularly hot days, reduce the intensity and duration of your dog’s exercise. Overexertion in high temperatures can quickly lead to overheating.
Make cool areas in your home
Ensure your home has a cool, shaded area where your dog can relax. Use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, a damp towel or cooling mat to lie on can provide relief or outdoors ensure they have access to shaded areas, a doghouse, umbrella, or even a tree can provide much-needed relief from the sun’s rays and a paddling pool to cool their paws in.
Refreshing treats
Offer your dog frozen treats like ice cubes added to their water, or specially made dog ice pops. These not only help cool them down but also provide mental stimulation. You can also freeze their favourite chew toys for added fun. Melon and cucumber make super treats.
Get grooming
Regular grooming helps remove excess fur and prevents matting, which can trap heat. However, avoid shaving your dog completely, as their fur provides some protection from the sun. Instead, opt for a trim to keep them comfortable.
Use Cooling Products
Consider investing in cooling vests, bandanas, or mats designed to help regulate your dog’s body temperature. These products use materials that absorb and dissipate heat, providing a cooling effect.
Never leave you dog in the car
Even with the windows open cars get very hot inside, it can take as little as 6 minuts for your dog to die.
Be vigilant for symptoms of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting. If you notice any of these signs, move your dog to a cooler area immediately and offer water. Contact your vet if symptoms persist.
Keep an eye on weather forecasts and be prepared for sudden temperature changes. The UK’s climate can be unpredictable, so staying informed helps you take proactive measures to protect your pet
By following these tips, you can help your dog stay cool and comfortable during warmer weather, ensuring they remain healthy and happy. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your furry friend safe in the heat.
